Endorsement embarrassment

Endorsements have been discussed here in past postings, but I came to a realization Tuesday evening why some picks mean more than others.

While perusing the Grand Rapids Press, I noticed the daily publication endorsed four candidates for Kent County Board of Commissioners. One was of particular note, the selection of Holly Zuidema over Eric Schmidt in the 14th District. The reason for the Press picking her was, I kid you not, she is a female. That’s right.

The GRP apparently didn’t know enough about these two relatively unseasoned politicians who want to replace Tom Postmus, who is running for drain commissioner. So its editorial board took the chicken’s way out by choosing Zuidema simply because she’s a female and the GRP believes more women should serve on the County Board.

The Press didn't apply the same standard when it admitted Keith Butler and Michael Bouchard were both capable, yet they chose Bouchard who is white over Butler who is black. It could certainly be argued that there aren't enough blacks in the Senate- their editorial even admits it. So why the contradiction? And will the Press follow it's own version of Affirmative Action when Bouchard faces Debbie Stabenow for the U.S. Senate seat in November? Not likely. The Press will probably also pass over our female Governor to try to give a boost to the campaign of local billionaire Dick Devos- another white male, in case you hadn't noticed. I suspect their motives are insincere and they only support the "minority" when they don't have a dog in the fight.

The GRP has shown a disturbing trend in endorsing incumbents about 95 percent of the time and when in doubt over two or more challengers, it picks the female. I suggest it shows a lack of knowledge and understanding of the candidates and the issues. The Press back in 1994 endorsed for 87th District State Representative Cathy Williamson of Middleville, a former county commissioner who was retired by voters by a wide margin in 1988. She really didn’t bring anything to the table except she was a female. She was one of seven candidates back then and the GRP bypassed Terry Geiger, Bill Cook, Dennis McKelvey and Richard Dean — because Cathy was a female. She went on to finish way back in the pack so it's doubtful the endorsement from the GR daily had any effect on voters.

Not long ago at a candidates’ forum at Grand Valley State University for four people hoping to succeed term limited State Senator Ken Sikkema, it was said the GRP will endorse Joanne Vorhees over fellow State Rep. Mark Jansen — you guessed it, because she’s a female. My source who attended that forum called the four candidates “Tweedledee and Teeedledum Squared” because there was virtually nothing different in the candidates’ views, they all seemed to come from the same GOP School of Marching in Lockstep. They all dance to the same fiddler, so perhaps Vorhees isn’t sucha bad pick. After all, she’s a female and she and her husband, Harold, have had a lot of experience feeding at the public trough and skirting term limits laws.

With all this in mind, do not be shocked if the Press urges voters to fill in the little circle next to Susan Vlietstra for the Republican 87th District State Representative primary. It has nothing to do with whether she’s best qualified or has a solid grasp of the issues — she’s a female, that’s what counts — at least when none of the candidates are friends of the Press' editorial board.

At least the Lansing State Journal carefully examined all of the candidates and then made the difficult and correct choice in the 87th District by endorsing Brian Reynolds. Meanwhile, the Grand Rapids Press editorial page continues to be an embarrassment.

I agree Pol that any endorsement by either Booth Papers (Kzoo Gazette and GR Press--Penasee Globe is the red-headed stepchild in this mix) will miss the mark because they did not take the time to interview the candidates in this race, look at positions, etc.. Barry County seems to be off their radar screens.

I think you forgot another tact the GR Press likes to take, and that is endorse the biggest candidate opposed to the Gun Lake casino. In this case, I wouldn't be surprised if they endorsed Bailey.

The Kzoo Gazette has a little more independence and their editorial board actually takes its time to hand out endorsements. Since their reach is limited in the county,(and no interviews conducted) I'd doubt they weigh in.

I have yet to see anything from the Battle Creek Enquirer either.

It was interesting to see the lack of the good ole boy network, who supported the pill pusher, in JNP's ad, which did not have any "Paid for by............." in it. However, there did appear to be a substantial number of up and coming boys in blue, possibly the "clique" of tomorrow. JNP very wisely steered away from the likes of nystrom, neil, sarver, and the whole 911 bunch. Good move, but most would have made it. No one wants to claim them as supporters!

On Clare Tripps ad she says "Vote for Experience?" Experience in juggling a boyfriend and husband, and 3 houses?

Wayne Adams listed "preserving rural, agricultural, and recreational heritage." He would appreciate our vote to continue working for us.

Could you walk into a corporation with such scanty resumes and expect to be hired? I believe the laws should be changed to require each candidate have a resume on file, listing all the usual things, i.e. education, work experience, etc. For re-election, they should list everything they accomplished during their term of office. Be online where citizens can look up what they want to look at!

Didn't see an ad for Tom Wing. He must have been late and the J-ad doors were locked. Can someone buy him a Timex?

Can't beat Mark Englert's "It's YOUR government! He's definitely the candidate for Orangeville and Yankee Springs.

Then "In My Opinion" by 911 Board "annointed" character Jim Brown, a "taxpayer and Hastingsville Twp Supervisor. He suggests a committee be formed to study the Parks needs for the County. Perhaps he should be more concerned with a committee to study the whackos on the 911 Board. In my opinion, he should resign! Even one of his own Board Members suggested it. They just can't get a clue, can they? Took out a paid ad for this. Does he really think someone cares enough about what he thinks to spend his money on an ad?

Nice family oriented ad for Susan. Darn those pant suits!

Ken DeMott, great lengthy ad, what they all should contain. Gives the voters an idea of who they are voting for! He gets an A+.

Also very good one for the Prairieville Supervisor.

Bill Bailey, or Jim I guess. Too grossly into himself, didn't even read it, too long and wordy, typical politician we are trying to get rid of! No El, not a contradiction. Resume a little more detailed on "real" qualifications, not false promises and claims (yes, I did flash my eyes across it).

Had to delay here at the end. Wanted to check last page for Tom's Market, thought Wing may have made it late into the chicken wing special, but none listed.

Ho Hum, more of the same. As long as this rant has been going on it would seem that somebody would take a mild interest in a few facts. Even Fred got sucked in to believing that the County Board ineptness has someting to do with 911 governance.
What little interest I have in this issue has at least shown that the 911 Board is not autonomous. At best it may be semi-autonomous. Take the following quiz (you can use the Banner for a guide, but you will get a failing grade):
1.) Who formed the 911 Board? _____ (correct answer - the Barry County Township Association, not the County Board)
2.) Who is the "leader" of the founding organization? _______ (correct answer - Jim Carr, not Charlie, not Ron, not Clare, etc.)
3.) Who is responsible for the behavior of the 911 Board? _______ (correct answer - the Township Association, not the County Board, not the State of Indiana, etc)
4.) Is the 911 Board autonomous? ____ (correct answer, No!)
5.)Who writes the paychecks, withholds the FICA, FedTax, MichTax, etc._______ (correct answer - Barry County, not 911, not Charlie)
6.)Who decides on pay raises and fires/hires dispatchers ______ (correct answer - Charlie, not either of the Boards)
7.) Who gave Charlie his phenomenal raise? _________ (correct answer - the 911 Board, not the County Board)
8.)(Bonus Question to see if you are doing your homework) Who is the Chairman of the Association that is responsible for oversight of the 911/Central Dispatch Board, and who has mysteriously been hidden away and insulated from scrutiny by the Liberal Media? __________ (Nope, not Clare, not Arnold Schwartzenegger, not DeVos, not the composer of Kumbaya)
9., 10.) You get two more bonus points if you can write an essay that will convince the County Board, any of the Commissioners, or a published reporter of the Banner, to change the tune from the same old sweet refrain written by an agitator to a new tune entitled "The Whole Truth".
By the way, you are not allowed to read the ByLaws of the 911 Board. You are not allowed to discuss this with the Chairman of the County Development and Planning Committee of the County Board. You are not allowed to quote Jim Carr or any Township Supervisor. You are only allowed to read ... and believe ... the Banner and/or the Agitator blog.

pura vida!

Nextly, regarding the expensive ad promoting the Barry County Parks and Recreation "Department". I suppose that in today's information environment you can print anything you can afford to pay for, but this crap about completing the rail-to-trail with Charlton Park millage is the purest distilled bullshit. You can correct me by giving me the page number in the 2006 County Budget where the Charlton Park Board gets the new name of "Barry County Parks and Recreation Department". Dave should be ashamed to lend his name to this ad. There is no such "department" and even if there was, it would have some small influence on the remaining 11 townships that don't already have a Parks Department. Most of the township parks are better maintained than the one that gets free millage money.
While the lie is perpetuated that the County Board could possibly provide any slight amount of progress on a trail system, the only effort to run a sewer line out to Thornapple Manor concentrates on running along the old Nashville Highway to avoid facing the issue. Give me a freakin' break!

Does anybody remember when the Barry County Economic Alliance was formed with $60,000 worth of "seed money" until the industrialists stepped up to the plate to become "autonomous"? Perhaps these funds could be used to buy some trail segments in Hastings Township.

Although I usually agree with el grillo, I do think it would be good if he honored us by staying on topic.

Yes el grillo, the rails to trails failure of the county board and the other political subdivisions is a disgrace and the giving away of public property to favored friends borders on corruption.

But come on el grillo, stay on topic.

O.K.,Pat,

Be sure to read the Grand Rapids Press if you are rabid for the whole truth concerning Kent County people who are running for office.

Or, was it, I like girls, too, so let's vote for girls.

Or, maybe we should all rush to the polls to vote for Bouchard before all those Canadian insurgents swarm over the Ambassador Bridge and start a riot in Downtown Detroit.

Or, maybe the real fear is that most of those Canucks don't have yellow hair and blue eyes and wear skirts.

What was the topic, again?

“On topic”
This blog is supposedly about politics, so I can’t imagine any issue more about political shenanigans than the issue of increasing our property taxes through lies and deceit, unless it is the failure of the local media to report the whole truth. The latest Banner features a huge ad, paid for with tax money, that repeats the misinformation also spread on the Internet by the Charlton Park Board.
Perhaps the deception is a result of ignorance and failure to do any homework. I will concede this intention, and accept the excuse that most people are basically too lazy to verify information they see in writing.
First of all, this week on Page 9 of the Banner, the “Barry County Parks and Recreation Millage Committee” claims as a first bullet priority that they will “Develop the PAUL HENRY TRAIL LINEAR PARK”. This lie is based on the recent quit claim deed from the Thornapple Trail Association to Barry County of land they didn’t even have a clear title to, and haven’t had surveyed. The only piece of land that was transferred runs from the Eaton County line, through the Village of Nashville, and across a piece of land claimed by (previously hotly contested by the Washington family and consequently sold to) “Gribbin LLC”. It continues beyond the Gribbin LLC claim all the way to the centerline of Devine Road (which is east of the famous Morgan Crossing), after crossing the now-closed and gated County-maintained Greggs Crossing Road. The entire transaction is confined to Castleton Township!
Perhaps the County intends to employ a surveyor from St.Johns to do the necessary research.

Here’s the political “topic”. The County Board Facilities and Property Standing Committee provides oversight to the “County Parks” Board. The Chair-marm of the F&P Committee is Sandy James, who forced the City to sell her a piece of the trail for $163.40 back in 1992. The other members of her committee are County Chair-marm Tripp, County Vice Chair-person French, and my favorite for the next Chair of the County Board, Dr. Mike Callton, who currently represents Castleton Township. His opponent, what’s-his-name, will certainly demonstrate aggressive leadership in developing something-or-other.
Down at the other end of the trail we have Rutland Township, where Larry Haywood endorses Keith Ferris on Page 4. Larry claims nearly the most amount of the railroad bed of anybody and is the best Planning and Zoning guy in Rutland Township. Keith will certainly replace Sandy as our great champion of economic development through tourism. How can we look forward to any change when Ferris signs share the same holes as Bailey and sit in the same holes where Sandy signs were in previous campaigns? Would Callton select Ferris to take his place on the Barry County Planning Commission if he became Board Chair? Am I still “off topic”?
“Parks Board” member, Mary Deyo Young, is probably a very dedicated and hard-working volunteer out at Charlton Park as are all the unpaid citizens on that Board, including Uncle Jeff SamNortwick. She claims on Page 5 that our taxes will only go up by $12 a year (this can be paid in cases of pop, apparently). She bases this on the average cost of a home in Barry County of $50,000. Banker Dave attests to this data in the Page 9 ad. The Banner stands mute. I suspect that this data could stand some tweaking.

Steve’s editorial claims that “Public officials in 911 denial”. I have to assume that he is referring to the Township officials, or City and Village officials. Part of the political “topic” is verifying jurisdiction. If 911 is an important County Board issue, than I would expect the local media to attend the Committee meeting of the “County Development and Planning” Standing Committee (French – James, Callton, Gibson, alt.Nevins) and would expect a quote from Commissioner Nevins who has been appointed as a member of the 911 Board. Alas, the Standing Committee met at its regularly scheduled time and place (1st Tuesday @ 9:00AM of every month) and had nothing important enough to think about worthy of reporting. Even an on-site comment from Ag3 would have shown some interest, but, nada.

“In my opinion”, the obligation of the media does not end with faithfully and accurately repeating the lies and deception they trip over or have handed to them. When facts are missing or are misinformation and incomplete, “reporting” should go a step further.

Finally, please ignore my opinions and verify my facts for yourself. If you can’t tell the difference, I apologize for mincing.

el: you need your own blog man, or go to Ag3's blog. He deals with these issues better.

Jay,
I will continue to monitor this blog through next week. If the content changes I will stick around, but I really don't have much interest in discussing personalities. My opinions are pretty much in a rut until I get factual data that changes them.

Boggsone said...

Thanks El! "In a rut?" I had someplace else in mind!

Pol Watcher said...

El, I am really getting tired of your jabs at what I do. If you don't like it, then takes Gandhi's advice and "Be the blog you wish to see in the world." This blog isn't about personalities, it's about elections. The way we change our elected officials is by voting them out of office when we get the chance. Despite your assertions, the 911 Board issue can very clearly be affected by voting out to the biggest apologists on the county board- Clare Tripp and Tom Wing. The county board can choose to provide direct oversight of the board- IF THEY WISH.

If you want to make a blog about rail trails then feel free to do so. You're a smart guy and I sure as hell would love to read that blog. Until then quit whining that I don't follow your orders. Starting a blog is pretty damn easy. Get to it...

el grillo said...

Pol,
You don't have to report the news if you don't want to. It just seemed like a good idea, to me, for somebody to do it.
Next, I apologize to Steve. It was Fred's editorial.
Next, there is already a blog on rail trails, but it doesn't apply to increasing the taxes in Barry County. It deals with current problems being solved in more developed environments.
Increasing taxes would be newsworthy, to me, but apparently not to anybody else.
Misleading the few people who will vote Tuesday with a taxpayer supported ad seems interesting to me as a topic to discuss, I seem to be alone on this.
Next, I have a blog. It wouldn't be of any interest to you. It isn't about trails or personality destruction.
I guess you will be finished with this blog Wednesday. Do you have a recommendation of another that deals with factual information in Barry County with intelligent commentary? I have seen the Ag3 blog.

Jay said...

El: I don't think this blog will finish on Wednesday, Pol hasn't finished his mission: to expose the sordid scandals and slimeballs of the area's political scene.

That job will never be done. We may see a decline in posters, but the hardcore will stay on.

I should emphasize that this is a blog, not a news channel. You are more than welcome to set up your own, they are quick and easy (addictive).

Despite your claims, the ad in question looks kosher. However, if you have a complaint about any advertisment, download the complaint form found here:

Ag3: The jerk's lap dog.

Let's see...
I didn't vote for Bailey because:
A. I didn't see eye to eye with him on taxes, casino and medical marijuana.
B. He failed in a two man race six years ago.
C. He's screwed up Barry County enough.
D. Thinks there's a tribal casino in New Buffalo, IN (wrong) and made up an entire story about it at the forum.
E. He associates with the corrupt and incompetent elements of Barry Co.
F. He cannot file a campaign finance statement on time.
G. He hasn't drawn much money or support from the community.
and lastly, he's a tool.

So Timmy, go get Lassie, because Big Jim will be down a well of defeat tonight.
