Attorney General Misconception

It's been brought to my attention that some local Democrats are under the misconception that they will be voting for the party's nominee for Attorney General on the August 8 primary ballot. This is not correct. Candidates for Attorney General are nominated by political parties at their fall state convention (Michigan Election Law, Act 116 of 1954, Section 168.72).

While I understand the desire to not only replace the ineffective philanderer Mike Cox but also to try to quell any chance of Geoffrey Feiger from getting the nomination, the only way Democrats can vote for Scott Bowen, Amos Williams or even Feiger is to go to the Democratic Party state convention August 26-27 at Cobo Hall in Detroit. You have to be a member of the party for at least 30 days prior to be able to vote at the convention so if you aren't already a member it's too late.

This is something that has come up more than once in conversations about the local County Board races and the GOP primary race for State Rep. 87th district. Except for selecting the person very likely to go down to defeat against Vern Ehlers, there is really no reason for Democrats to not vote in the GOP primary and help select their next County Commissioner and State Representative. And voting in the Republican primary doesn't change your party affiliation or do anything else except make your vote actually mean something instead of being a symbolic act. While Democrats may not be fond of the choices, they can at least help make it so the truly awful candidates don't win. Sometimes, you have to take your best deal...

AG, SoS, Boards of Education and Universities, and Court of Appeals/Supreme Court Judges are nominated at the party conventions. Fieger was talking about running for AG as an independant or as a Libertarian (they take almost anyone).

Interesting...interesting...

Excerpt from Today's (8/4) Gongwer interview of Chris Thomas, State Director of Elections

Mr. Thomas said, adding that he expects more than 1.5 million Michigan residents to vote in the primary election. That’s about 19 percent turnout of all the registered voters in the state – a stable number of people at the polls, Mr. Thomas said, that has been seen over the years – however that is less than the number of people who voted in the hotly contest gubernatorial primary in 2002.

Estimates are still being worked out for how many people are expected to vote in this year’s general election, but Mr. Thomas said it should be more than 3 million, he’s just not sure yet how much over that will be.

Juicey excerpts from today's Kzoo Gazette article

Yet Vlietstra, Bailey and others aren't giving up. While Calley said he's invested about $25,000 of his own money into the campaign, Vlietstra estimates she'll spend about $30,000 of her own funds, and Bailey said he'll spend up to $35,000 from his pocket.

...Bailey refers to Calley's youth. ``I considered myself pretty sharp as young man, but at 29 years old, there's a lot of experiences you haven't had,'' Bailey said. ``My wife and I have 12 children, and there's a lot that comes with that.''

Calley says he'll put up his credentials against any of the candidates.

``I have economic credentials that are unmatched,'' he said, pointing to his experience as a commercial-loan officer. ``I've worked with hundreds of small businesses in dozens of industries.

Jay,
It appears that Mr. Thomas may be using a paraphrase from his Middle School Government education which claims we have a two-party system. It would then follow that if 1.5 million registered voters show up for the Republican Primary, then it logically follows that there will be the other half showing up in November to vote faithfully as Democrats. It might be mildly amusing to track this graphically from actual data. If a party cannot get anybody to run for office in each of the Barry County Districts, it is unlikely that there is much interest. My bet is on less than 25% of the registered voters showing up in November. I control this government, personally, and resent the implication that additional voters will benefit the country. It will merely dilute my power and control.
Presently, my ability to instill fear extends worldwide and according to the latest AP article on Cuba...
"William Sanchez, an attorney for the Cuban-American non-profit Democracy Movement, urged Bush to tell Cuba to set an elections timetable and let Cuban-Americans come to the island to help with a political transition."
Remember the Bay of Pigs?
"The Cuban government used such statements by what it calls the "terrorist mafia" in Miami — as well as Bush's call Thursday for democratic change on the island — to justify its fears of an invasion."

I'm investing in Russian jet and rifle manufacturers with my oil profits.
Taxes should be reduced to improve the economy!

El: Believe what you want, but Mr. Thomas' projections are usually on target. As the article said, November's aren't in yet.-jaw

Natwho,
Did the subprime mortgage gig once. Didn't like screwing people.

Ag3,
I'm easily qualified to be the Director of this and many other things, y usted?

Mike,
You skipped the part about the big dog. Necessito perro bravo!
What you guys got from the Thornapple Trail Association was the railbed segment from Devine Road East to the Eaton County line. Actually, what you got was a quit claim deed to property in dispute, so you got no more than the Trail Association had the right to give, which isn't much.
A family by the name of Washington held the property at the end of Greggs Crossing Road, on both sides. They have now given what right they presumed to have to another party"..."LLC.
I'm impressed with the fact that you actually visited the area, and even got out of your car.
I guess it is this kind of responsiveness that makes me think you would lead the Board out of darkness.
Visit Rose, down in Land Information / Mapping, she has done studys for Commissioners regarding the Trail. If you ask the right questions she may give you the right answers. At the very least, she did a study for Tom Wing.

Was the study or mapping for Tom Wing the quickest route from home to Board meetings? That's what he needs.

Maybe Clare should look into the mortgage deal for the county, they may give her a better rate ;).

Ag3: Are you suggesting a teather device for Tom Wing? err homing becon? Ground control to Major Tom... ;) Maybe that GPS system Yao Ming uses...

Bailey's campaign finance statement is finally up.
Mike Callton is covering all his bases giving to Susan, the Brians and Jim. Calley and Bailey share Shane McNeil as a contributor. Sandy James, Sandy Schondelmayer, Ken, Neil, and Tom Wing round out Bailey's paultry donation base.

Well, Reynolds check from MEA came in and they nearly maxed out on him (I was wrong). Most likely paid for those faded color ads in the Ionia papers.

Boggsone said...

Jay: With all those names supporting Bailey why would anyone vote for him? Shane has no credibility here, the rest not worth talking about.

Jay said...

Ag3: Exactly...as Bill Cosby once said "The more you know..."

Boggsone said...

Right Timmy, you eat everything at the breakfast table and I'll vote for little nobody Jim Bailey, or was it Beetle Bailey, or Bill Bailey? I forget, can you enlighten me?
