Squeal like a pig

Today's Hastings Banner contained a bombshell story in which we are told that a member of Michigan Senate Majority Leader Ken Sikkema's office sent an abusive email to the Unicameral Michigan Fire the Senate campaign. While it's certainly not surprising there is no love lost between the highly paid staffers in Lansing and the people wishing to throw them out on the unemployment line with millions of workers whose jobs were lost due to the policies they helped enact, it is surprising that the person who seems to have done it would do it in the manner he chose. According to the Banner:
An e-mail identified as being sent Tuesday from Steve Ewers, media specialist with the Senate Majority Communications Office in Lansing, is regarded by spokespersons for the grass-roots state-wide drive as threatening, intimidating and abusive.

So, the guy who specializes in media and communications is stupid enough to send a message that is not only "threatening, intimidating and abusive" but is also easily traced?! What an idiot! Sikkema should fire the guy just for being so stupid. Ewer's email began with the subject line:
“Your crusade”
and continued...
“This likely came about for a personal reason. There is nothing on your website that gives a valid reason for your pursuit. You are a f...ing idiot — shoot yourself through the temples and do us all a favor.”

Joe Lukasiewicz, spokesperson for Unicameral Michigan, has rightly played his cards close to the vest and has not revealed how close or how far away the group is from getting on the ballot. It seems his strategy has paid off and the Senators are getting a spooked at the thought of having to look for a job. Suddenly, outsourcing may not be seen as a good thing by all the free-marketeers in Lansing who could care less when your job gets packed up and shipped to China or India. Apparently, according to Lukasiewicz, this isn't the first time someone in Lansing has lost their cool:
“As we've gathered signatures around the state, both state representatives and senators have literally gotten into our faces. I did not back down from their intimidation and in some cases, I left them swearing at me in frustration over their lost argument. But Mr. Ewers’ letter is especially troubling. It appears to be a threat.”

I would appreciate it if the many readers of this site would do the favor of contacting Mr. Sikkema and let him know that the citizens of Michigan do not agree that Senate staffers, paid for with taxpayer dollars and using taxpayer-bought computers, should be harassing a grassroots citizene effort merely exercising their democratic freedom. Please let Sikkema know that Steve Ewers' actions are worthy of immediate dismissal:

Email sent to Sikkema!

I was extremely disappointed with the Prosecutors Debate tonight. Yes, I should have sent questions, I didn't!

The questions seemed to come from a typical State Bar Exam. They answered in classic textbook fashion. Very milktoast questions, I'm sorry.

Julie took Tom to task for "talking to two deputies" about the Wymer case. When asked about a possible conflict with her police officer husband she stated "I bounce cases off him, I value his input," or something to that effect. I don't believe the Sheriff or local Police Chiefs will like their cases being "reviewed" by a Sergeant in a small police Department! It's none of his business. Let the Hastings cases be brought into the Sheriffs bedroom and bounced off him!

I believe the gentleman who wrote about the Wymer case mentioned they were arrested "again" a few months later on the same type drug charges. Why was she not asked about that?

On plea bargains they both gave textbook answers. What both should have been asked was: What percent of your cases, Julie today, Tom when you worked in Barry County, were plea bargained. My guess is 80-90%, if not more. Very little goes to pre-lim or trial.

Alot was said about prevention and education. The Prosecutors job is to prosecute. Leave the social work to the people trained in that area. For over 40 years, education and prevention has failed. It's getting its return cycle, usually about every 25 years. Won't work again! And, they better not take responsibility for the recent stats saying meth use is down 30%. It was hard police work and prosecution. They can go into rehab in prison.

Julie talked about what she has done in the job since appointed/annointed, whatever you want to call it. This is just the advantage given to annointed candidates which gall citizens. The other candidate can't respond, he didn't do anything in the office, he didn't work there! Unfair!

Bottom line is we have just the two candidates. I am now leaning in Julies corner, but hope she is the same person a year from now that she has been on the campaign trail since she got the job. She comes off as a little stronger for me. Now, Julie, prove it to me and the rest of the citizens

Keep cases out of your house though, they don't belong there. Find another attorney to bounce things off. Watch TV, they do it all the time!

I was disappointed because I thought I heard at the beginning there would be a few written questions taken at the end! We were "dismissed" without participation!

Good luck Julie

I hope the Clare and other debates have some more pointed questions than I heard tonight. Tonight was a cake walk, no real winner!

David asked some real softball questions (marajuana, innocent until proven guilty) that gave no insight. I hope he improves his line of questions for the next debate.

I agree there was no real winner. Julie came off a little mean. Tom was Tom. I couldn't make up my mind.

Saw Clare there. Overheard her saying that she keeps "her bras at all four houses." Will Englerth get that intimate with her during the forum?

and on Ewers, the guy is an idiot.

Todays Banner, June 22,2006:

Page 1: Troubling e-mail is definitely disturbing, but reminiscent of how "they" go on the attack when us honest citizens exercise our constitutional rights. Occurs right here in little Barry County. All they know is attack thy enemies, when the enemy is really within them!

Page 1: Congrats to the new TK Principal! Could mistake you for a student. How do you keep so young looking?

Page 2: Farmers Market. First potential negative remark about Julie N-P. Possibly making an appearance there as the "annointed" prosecutor. Would have more respect if her "official" appearances somehow involves the "other" candidate, or if she were to curtail her appearances to keep a separation from candidate-annointed prosecutor. I have to admit I'm a little uneasy with the edge given by Judge Fisher. Still undecided though. Will watch both until election day! Possibly the blame should go to the Farmers Market people for not inviting her opponent.

Page 3: Condolences to the Wolpe family and their loss of Judy Wolpe.

Page 3: OH NO! Not another Hastings "Club" forming. Barry County Entrepreneur Club they call it, for business owners. Does this include "Monkey Business?" Better reserve the High School auditorium if the latter is true!

Page 3: Congrats to Sheriff Dept on big weed bust.

Page 4: Shame on Wade Trombley and his illegal sign posting. Will make a good Lansing "Clique" member!

Page 14: William Dennis Gabriel probation extended for consuming alcohol and assault. Forgot to mention former Hastings State Police Sergeant. Didn't forget the Barry Emergency Manager each time he was in Court.

Page 15: Good job by "Gina" our new Sheriff tracking dog. Found drugs. Shows good promise. Good work Dar and Richelle, and Gina, of course.

Motorcyclist arrested by State Police for speeding 130 Miles per hour. Awful fast for a police car to go. No chance for someone turning in front of them. Visibility poor when they're coming at you that fast. Murder, Manslaughter, what would it be Julie, if the patrol car spins out of control and hits one of us innocents? Seems we are always dodging speeding State Cars. Do they have any supervision or rules, or do each make their own up as they go? Just answered my own ?, look at the retired group we have roaming aimlessly throughout BC! They were some of the ones who trained this group of new kids on the block!

Yes, I've been meaning to write something up in the next day or two. Should have done it by now, sorry. Sometimes it takes a couple days for the words to gestate inside my brain before they sound good enough to type. Look for something Monday or Tuesday night hopefully.
