‘Wall of Blue’ protects 911 director

The “Wall of Blue” has been circling the wagons around Barry Country Emergency 911 Director Charlie Nystrom this summer, and with good reason. This “wall” generally refers to a fraternity of police officers that takes care of one another when under threat or siege. Sometimes, like with too many labor unions, the one getting the protection may not deserve it.

Rumors and stories about Charlie Nystrom are about as old as the Barry County 911 system itself. The most common raps against him over the years have been that he’s abusive toward employees, is rigid in his style of leadership, has a lousy attitude toward women, doesn’t accept criticism without getting mad and getting even, plays favorites with dispatchers and is gone from his duties far too often. A couple of the more interesting charges were that Nystrom commonly called one female employee “shit for brains” and mocked another’s son’s behavior, though the child was suffering from a debilitating disease. There also were stories that Nystrom, a former state cop, was allegedly asked to retire from the force because of habitual troubles with alcohol and with abusing women physically and emotionally.

Until recently, I treated these stories as just that — stories. But like Bill Clinton’s penchant for oral sex, Charlie has shown a disturbing pattern of behavior that leads me to suspect there’s more to this than just idle gossip.

Six years ago Charlie promoted the tawdry rumor that a female writer from J-Ad Graphics was having a sexual affair with State Rep. candidate Jim Bailey. The rumor was started by misinterpreting a comment made that the two were “in bed together,” in a political sense, not in the Biblical sense. Nystrom was a strong supporter of Bailey’s opponent in that primary election, Gary Newell, himself (what a coincidence!) a retired state police commander.

Not long ago, he took an angry telephone answering machine message from Hastings Banner Editor David Young and distributed it to all government units in the county for their listening pleasure. This one should be remembered because it’s part of a pattern of how Charlie tries to get even.

J-Ad Graphics Vice President Fred Jacobs took Charlie to task for running a 911 department with a lot of leftover cash, about 80 percent equity, so he can buy fancy frills such as a GPS tracking system that would make Barry County the envy of the state. Jacobs even suggested the 911 Board he’s supposed to be answering to is packed with people loyal to him, therefore he is accountable to virtually no one. Nystrom got a nice 4.5% salary raise, bumping him up to $61,000 a year and making him one of the higher paid 911 directors of Michigan counties comparable in size and population. His raise was larger than almost all other county employees this year.

Then came the story of Judy Wooer, who had been on the 911 Board since its inception in 1991, but was retired from her position while she was on vacation last spring. Charlie protested that Rutland Township Supervisor Jim Carr did the honors and not him, but it’s interesting to note Carr is a dispatcher who works for Nystrom. Carr defended the move by saying it’s time to get new blood on the board, yet the other board member, Don Boysen, was reappointed even though he’s been on the board just as long as Wooer. What a coincidence it was that Ms. Wooer constantly refused to sign Charlie’s vouchers before meetings and insisted on examining them. It was suggested in black and white long before she was not reappointed that Charlie would have her removed.

Memo to Messieurs Carr and Nystrom: Don’t pee on taxpayers’ shoes and then tell them it’s raining.

Most recently there have been allegations that Charlie has had a high old time on the public’s dime, supposedly spending a casino weekend in the Upper Peninsula to attend the funeral of a fellow 911 director, turning in vouchers for hotels he did not stay at and irregularities with gasoline charges. Whether true of not, this is the kind of stuff that cost former Caledonia School Superintendent Wes VanDenburg his job. Yet those who bring up questions and suspicions about Nystrom pay a price.

Not long after Jacobs mentioned at the County Board forum that allegations against Charlie have been turned over the prosecuting attorney, a couple of public officials received mysterious mailings charging them with youthful indiscretions that could be made public. Sounds like the same kind of game played against Young.

And now the 911 Board, led by Chairman Ron Neil, a retired state police commander (surprised?), is sending letters to all county commission candidates essentially saying Jacobs and Young are out to get Charlie and all these rumors are unfounded. This came after County Board Chairwoman Clare Tripp, Administrator Michael Brown and Neil met privately last week to discuss the mounting stories.

It is difficult to get to the truth when there is a firewall, a “Wall of Blue” that won’t let you penetrate to the inner core. Some have been trying, but they eventually get discouraged by the many roadblocks thrown in their way. At higher levels, the state attorney general’s office has refused to look at the issues and Jacobs and others have been told “don’t go there” with these allegations.

The word is that unless there are changes in at least two County Board seats in the Aug. 8 primary election, nothing will ever be done and Nystrom will continue to enjoy his insulation from examination and criticism. Charlie’s best friends on the board right now might be Tripp and Tom Wing. He needs them to win. Otherwise, there may be a true inquiry. And we can't have that, can we?

Yes, change is needed at the County Board level oh so badly! It is too early in the morning to comment more fully. The "Blue Wall of Silence" surrounding this man is very paper thin. The majority of the street officers, who are the real ones that put their lives on the line every day, have no real desires to protect this man in any way, shape or form. Hastings City officers have a CD or DVD documenting many of the 911 goof ups should one of their own get hurt or killed in the line of duty!

It is obvious Clare Wing and Tom Tripp do not care about the lives of these officers and what their families will do without them. Perhaps the County should pay all there expenses for a trip to the Police Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. where officers killed in the line of duty are imbedded on marble walls for all eternity. Their children left to only mourn and cry over a mother or father unable to hug them through the hard times of becoming a man or woman. Looking up to the empty bleacher seat next to their mother, envisioning their father sitting there as they throw a no-hitter at a high school baseball game.

Clare, Tom, Wayne, Mike Brown, wake up, the storm is coming. You have a hugh liability on your hands in one individual, not to mention the hood that lays down cover for him. I would never follow neil into a police situation with him as our leader.

Neil and nystrom have not been cops for years. They are out of touch and need to retire and leave the copping to the younger fellas/gals.

Turn your head, you turn your heart, integrity, and compassion. Will you shed one tear when one of Barry County's finest fall! I really wonder?

How can you sleep at night?

As an interesting note. A PI (Private Investigator) can do things legally that are a crime when done by a police officer.

Are there any performance evaluations on this wingnut?

Boggsone said...

Jay: Performance evaluations done by the 911 Board, his cronies! I remember one year when Sarver rated him low. Sarver was absent from next meeting and Neil cut him down for having the gall to rate Charlie low. Sarver was hot! Gave Neil a mouthful next meeting. Believe Judy Wooer also rated him low, see where she is now?

Sarver rides fence. Will go with you when the evidence can't be manipulated or twisted.

Pat's reference to P.I., don't know if that was a general comment or directed at Ronnie Neil who is a Private Eye, aka Dick Tracy.

Neil may do things, but he better not be using 911 equipment, such as LEIN to do it. That is Jail time. As far as being afraid of neil, come and get me ronnie. You will meet your maker some day and will pay for your sins.

Boggsone said...

Now, to a better evaluation of the Pol's very good commentary.

There is a "Wall of Blue." But, in Charlies case it's very limited and does not include 90% of the street officers or even his dispatchers. It's his close cronies covering for him, and the Board (wingnut, tripp, adams, james). Can't forget to include Mike Brown.

When one starts the ball rolling, they will all come out against Charlie. It's up to a new Board or those with guts on the present board to stand up.

Can't access Charlies State personnel records, one former dispatcher tried.

Yes, more to story on Charlies last night in a patrol car!

Yes, on the tape being sent around to all the governments. Most did not even listen to it, took it for what it was worth, GARBAGE! More people than not know Nystrom. No one likes him, just use him or put up with him to get what they want or to not get on his wrong side and have he and his cronies threaten and intimidate you.

Pol had it right, the rumors add up when you start believing there is something to them because you are getting them from different people throughout different areas of the County.

He hated the Thornapple Fire Chief, hates the Prairieville Police Chief, doesn't like it when Barry Twp Chief speaks up (or in his words, "out of turn"). Play his game, or get your own toys!

Too bad this doesn't all add up to something for the County Commissioners. In civil cases it's called a "preponderance of evidence", not "proof beyond a reasonable doubt" like in criminal cases. OJ won the criminal case, but lost the civil case, need I say more. The Jury believed the mounting evidence after evidence that kept coming in.

We do need change on the County Board. Please call, email, knock on doors and vote the rascals out. Tell your friends or neighbors to contact ten others, and so on and so on.

We need VanNortwick, Englert for damn sure, Demott, and Nieves.

By the way, anyone ever look at the roadwork done on Orchard near Eddy (thereabouts, about 2-3 years ago? Big curve was cut down. Nice patch of land created and cleared, sprayed with grass seed, on south side of road. Guess who I saw mowing it the other day, Wayne Adams! Wonder if the Road Commission gave him a sweetheart deal of some sort on that. Grass really looking nice, one "Adams" for County Commission sign right in middle of it. Hmmmmmmmmm, just asking?

Charlie will go down, too stupid to not make a really big mistake someday that even little ronnie neil will run from!

Someone should do a survey of surrounding county 911 centers. The 911 Directors job is the 911 Center. Maybe a yearly 911 expo or training get-to-gether. The rest of the time he should be at the Center, he is a glorified Dispatcher, that's all.

The 911 Board did do something good when they had the big gasoline spill in Dowling. He went to the scene for some unknown reason? Unknown to many, to me he does what he wants. 911 Board did straighten him out and told him in emergencies like that his place was the 911 Center. Only time I can remember they put him in his place. He should not be involved in local politics, he is a glorified Dispatcher, period!

heads up. Reynolds got endorsement from Lansing State Journal today July 27.

See www.lsj.com and go to opinion.

I broke down and picked up a remider at my local gas station. Didn't see the Reynolds/PAC ad. What page is it on? Only ads I see for State Rep are Susan and Bailey.

P.S. Campaign Statements are 1 day away. Woohoo.

Jay said...

Found it... it's tucked in the back with the classifieds. Sort of blends in.

I see Reynolds has his statement on-line. No MEA check on there--but a big contribution from a staff writer for the Banner.

truthfulpat said...

Hypocracy of the month.

Bailey's ad in the Reminder whinning about other people being endorsed by the powerful interest groups. All of the ones he is referring to turned him down.
They found Bailey wanting so he denounces them.
I think I will stay with Reynolds who didn't even send the questionaires back.

Maybe his honorable conduct is part of the reason the Lansing State Journal endorsed Brian Reynolds.

Nobody knows the Lansing fakers better than they do.

Jay said...

I thought Lower and Calley were going to get into a fistfight at the forum, with Wade and Bailey taking jabs at the "PAC man" as well. It was high drama.

Doster was the class clown and provided the entertainment(I was waiting for Harpo and the horn at times), but he was a waste of space/time. Speaking of which, Fred needed a timekeeper.

Bailey is geographically challenged..."New Buffalo, IN (wrong)"...his whole talk on the casino issue was severely lacking in fact. He objected to Fred's "King James" characterization, but admitted that was the approach he was going to take to Lansing.

Reynolds took a while to warm up, but I think made his best comments by the time the SBT question rolled around.

Calley tried to take the high road, but came accross like he was a haughty schoolboy annoyed that these "peons" (Trombley, Bailey, and Lower) were taking issue with his endorsements.

High drama indeed. Wonder if the forum in Ionia will be half as exciting.

sentinel said...

I would have had tremendous admiration for Wade or Reynolds had they called "time out" and grabbed the mic away from Vlietstra who saw fit to ramble endlessly on EVERY question posed. Calley certainly took advantage of the open ended invitation to speak, even off subject. Freddie needs a stop watch. Who the hell posed the irrelevant 911 question that burned up over 20 minutes of time? Do you think Dave Young still has a job this morning? The casino question did little to separate the wheat from the chaff since they were able to weasle out so easily by saying it was a done deal anyways. King James might have capitulated on the casino deal despite being so morally opposed to gambling, but the followup question should have been how would he vote on future lottery dealings. We've heard the hypocricy from the lips of Birkholz being opposed to casinos then voting to expand the lottery. Fred really dropped the ball on this forum. I gave up two hours of my life and 10 pounds of sweat for nothing.

I was hoping for a RTL fight...Calley vs Lower. Calley was smart not to take the bait. But, Freddie was again wrong, not to bring up the right to life issue since most fought so hard for it but only one took away the prize. Whoever wins will have to debate the embryonic stem cell issue, definition of when life begins, and other devicive RTL issues. Me thinks Fred opted out of the RTL question because he was afraid it would shake his faith. Whatever reason, I think it would have been more of a defining question than the one on 911.

To me, Wade won. Calley came in a close second. Wade had concise, succinct answers and came across loud enough to be heard throughout that terrible hall. Calley, as he did on the radio forum, dominated the time. But unlike Vlietra who rambled on repeatedly, Calley wisely used the time to talk about all sorts of issues beyond the limited and sometimes stupid question(yes, there is such a thing as a stupid question). Calley was able to neutralize his banking PAC connection too and actually turn it into a campaigning positive. Reynolds, not seizing the opportunity to make statements, was hardly audible when he did speak. Yet another missed opportunity for Reynolds. In looking at King James, in the middle of the table as if he were still chair of the county commissioners, he came across as the king of doublespeak. Doster actually did a diservice to voters by showing up and wasting our time and stealing time from debate amongst the serious candidates.

Yes, the forum in Ionia will be half as exciting. Any zero multiplied by half will still be zero.
The most excitement that I read in the Banner on my return from South Manitou Island was the "citizens" survey. It proved my contention that 5 out of 6 registered voters won't show up to support the "democracy" they send cannon-fodder to die for.
I repeat, we live with a "representative" government. We deserve the government we have. 5 out of 6 representatives also don't show up for work.

el grillo said...

Back to the topic of the 911 chitter-chatter. Does the Sheriff qualify as one of the boys in blue? He seems to be outside the hallowed walls of justice. The Chairmarm had a tough time silencing him. Thanks to an interested public, she had to follow the rules and allow him to speak about being treated badly by the 911 guys you are so afraid of.
For my part, this tempest in the teapot seems aimed at selling papers.
Logically, the autonomous 911 Board has been put on notice that the current Director they have chosen to support is not popular with the general public (and apparently not with all the law enforcers). If there is more to all this than rumor and inuendo, the facts need to be aired publicly, if there indeed are any. If the Banner can be believed, the State Attorney General has refused to investigate the situation due to the lack of factual information, not because some State Policeman doesn't want to invest staff time chasing geese. Quite frankly, if there are insufficient facts, I'm not interested in reading much more of this crap. Papers can also be sold by accurate reporting of facts. I'm still waiting for the full report on the road granted by the County Commission across the County Trail, which is incorrectly identified as the Thornapple Trail one week, and the Paul Henry Trail the next. Could it be that the Banner is afraid of being attacked by more than just some local gun nuts? Perhaps the Banner is buddy-buddy with the landowners who are blocking the "economic development" of the County? How does Keith Ferris feel about the Haywood farm segment of the Rutland Memorial Pathway? Where does Mike Callton stand on the gate across Greggs Crossing Road?

Boggsone said...

El Grillo there is one hell of alot more to the 911 system problems than you know or have heard. Officers lives (This is crap?) are at stake because their radios don't work all the time, their batteries are dead in 1-2 hours after coming out of the chargers, and they're sitting on over a million dollars you and I voted in for equipment and the 911 Board DOES NOTHING! And, the County Board tells us they got all the answers "right" from little ronnie neil.

Ask your street cops. Has nothing to do about selling papers. The 911 Director is not even worthy of being in the paper!

WING acts like everything is peachy creame? Your Attorney General Investigators are State Police also, hence they have no more desire to go after their good ole boy retirees than the local state cops. Granted, alot of this stuff does not rise to the level of a criminal offense, but it certainly rises to the level where the PEOPLE SHOULD REIGN!

The Sheriff replaced one of their "good ole boys," steve debore and is now paying for it! He is not part of them, he is part of 99% of the public which is being ignored as they arrogantly go about their business, with the braindead backing them.

Be tired El, this is not going away til they put me 6 feet under!

Afraid of them? Never on a Sunday. They know where I am and can come for me anytime they think they can handle me!

SAVE A COP, GET RID OF SARVER, BOYSEN, FORBES, STATE POLICE LT, HASTINGS TWP BROWN, AND THE 911 DIRECTOR. APPOINT A TEMPORARY FINANCIAL OVERSEER, THE DISPATCHERS WILL RUN DISPATCH WITHOUT ANY NEED FOR THE good OLE BOYS! GIVE UM BUS FARE AND A NEW SUIT OUT OF TOWN!

GIVE 911 BACK TO THE SHERIFF AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED! At least he's playing with a full deck!

If Wade had said anything of substance, I may have agreed with Sentinel. To me the winners were the Brians. Brian Calley for the first half and Brian Reynolds for the second half. Reynolds during the first half was too brief for his own good. Calley in the beginning was well polished and looked to be the winner of the forum. Then came Trombley, Bailey and Lower with their attacks, and Calley seemed to be dealing more with the mud than substance. Once Reynolds got to the SBT question he was speaking more clearly and stole the show. I do think Reynolds came out on top over all.

I think all but Reynolds were mic hogs. Fred desperately needed to have Brinkert or someone keep time. The 911 question was a waste of a question. Speaking of which, it seemed as Fred got all of his start-up questions from Pol and this blog. Anyone else pick up on that?

As for Doster: If a candidate cannot even ask people at a forum to vote for them, then that person shouldn't be given a seat at the table. He did this as a lark and should of said hello and then good night to all and left. He did put levity in the event. I think his wasted time/space prevented Lower and Calley from coming to actual blows. Doster the sewer man/peace maker?

el grillo said...

Well, Agitator, that's a lot of stuff for chewing. So far I have found one mention in this blog of some cell phone "evidence" that has been turned over to the Prosecuting Attorney. Does the current Wall of Blue extend all the way around her office as well? I suspect that the "evidence" was too thin to be taken seriously.
If there is in fact more substance than all this life-threatening situation than I "know or have heard" then perhaps you can direct me to anything you have said in the distant past that has a factual background. Not that I want to read a repeat of some accusations and personal opinions. I would prefer names and numbers based on the truth.
If your response begins again with "Once upon a time..." I will continue to be your skeptic.
Please don't bother to remind me that the 911 millage has been too generous and that the 911 Board needs to have Michael Brown adjust the numbers to put the excess in the General Fund.

Also, Agitator, you are right on the mark about the rambling of this blog. Perhaps the threads should be more directed with specific titles, such as:

el grillo said...

Agitator,
Thanks for sparing me the "Once upon a time.."
Perhaps this will help with your dedication to "change" of an autonomous Board. I admit to not having done any homework and rely on a general understanding of the issue.
My understanding of the 911 "autonomous" Authority is that,
1. similar to other Authority boards, it was only authorized by the County Board after its structure and bylaws were approved by them. Typically, an autonomous Authority originates from an existing "dependent" Board.
2. The members of the 911 Board were then interviewed and selected by a Committee of the County Board which recommended the approvals by the full County Board. Typically, the terms of these members would be staggered to not expire simultaneously. This means that some members are always close to being removed and replaced or granted another term. This is the control available to the County Board. We have seen how this works (or fails to work) with the Charlton Park autonomous Board when MacKenzie loaded the Park Board with Commissioners. This is your first potential to affect change. Influence the two boards to get rid of any "bad apples". You may need to have more ammunition than mere bluster.
3. The autonomous Boards select and evaluate a Director. Only the autonomous Boards have the authority to hire and fire their Director. As we saw in the case of Peter Forsberg, the Park Board was able to fire him and replace him with George Shannon. The County Commissioners did not have any role to play in this action. The 911 Board has the same authority to deal with Charles Nystrom. Directors quite often can be dismissed "without cause" but it is not a wise decision.
4. Every autonomous Board holds an election of officers each year and elects a Chairperson, along with other officers as listed in their ByLaws. The Chairperson is mostly a figurehead who tries to run an efficient meeting. Motions are made. Minutes are kept and approved, etc.
5. Money for autonomous Boards comes from a variety of sources. Spending is according to Budgets which are approved by the autonomous Boards. As with any operation, the Board is able to predict, with the help of the Director and staff, how much money will be needed to complete the mission of the Board with a reasonable degree of accuracy. No Board should have such an excess of money that it becomes an embarrassment. In this regard, the County Administrator is well-paid to advise a Board that it is not exercising good judgement, and the Board is well advised to return some taxpayer funding to the General Fund where it can be used for other purposes. In no case is the awarding of a millage a license to spend money outside of the stated mission of the autonomous Board. The County Administrator should, but is not required to, remind an errant Board that future millage support will not be funded for a long term of blank checks (as is being requested by the current Charlton Park Board). Note that the concept of ten (10) years of millage is nearly incomprehensible, since a typical board member has a term of about three years. (I will reserve most comments on the ability of Barry County leadership to envision any time period longer than a payday). Lacking a long-term plan accompanied by a Budget Proposal should be considered as a non-request and should be summarily denied.Revenue sources should include sources in addition to the welfare check of a millage, but I digress.
6. No Board meets in a vacuum. Every Board meets in open session and the public owns the right to observe. The public should be allowed to address the Board in a respectful manner but has no right to speak without being recognized by the Chairperson. The Banner, and other media, are not invited to any public meetings. They are expected to be there! Failure to report on a meeting is an Editorial perogative! Failure to keep the public fully and completely informed is an Ownership perogative.
7. Typically, journalists are required to be objective. Typically, bloggers are not journalists.
8. Commissioners promise to tell the truth, the truth, and nothing but the truth. Perhaps the media makes the same commitment. You don't have to. Just begin with "Once upon a time ..."
9. Finally, the Barry County Board has such a huge amount of money in reserve that no millage request denial would every have any affect on funding an important service. The County Budget is a lovely printed document that is free for the asking. If you don't have one you need to get one. Third Floor, Admin Office. Skip the baloney titled General Fund. Go directly to "Special Revenue Funds" This is where the juicy stuff is hidden. When 911 has an excess of money, it shows up under a fancy name in their "savings account" under Special Revenue. Add up all the sheltered and hidden accounts and see how much we could grab in an emergency. It is Millions! Ask the Chairman of the Finance Committee what some of these are, and how much the total might be. If you get a straight and "whole truth" answer I'll eat your sweatiest shirt. I'm betting the answer will be "I'll have to ask Michael"

Boggsone said...

Quite a lesson, too much info to respond intelligently without careful study and research. A change in the County Board is a given must! A meeting of all the municipalities that partnered with the County to create this Board is then apparently needed and a 2/3 vote required to change the design, bylaws, and whatever else is needed to prevent the continued existance of this street-like gang of hoods, create term limits, and have oversight abilities (which the County says they do not).

Autonomous should be eliminated. It would really upset me to think that the 911 funds, not being used wisely by these thugs, goes into the General Fund. Necessary equipment is not being purchased and the monies disappear into the County Boards coffers for the expensive trips they take (James?), is what you are telling me? Must be the brownie points the 911 Board gives to Tripp, Brown and Wing to keep them off their backs? Are we paying for their health and retirement bennies with money mean't to protect my life? Someone fill Wing in, he just walked in late again!

Is this 911 millage not a dedicated millage?

I'm going to barf! But, will continue to bluster my fool head off, as others are starting to do, and hopefully will continue to do! August 8th can't come any sooner! Thanks

SAVE OUR COPS, SUPPORT OUR SHERIFF, DOWN WITH 911!!!!!!!

Jay said... Speaking of which, it seemed as Fred got all of his start-up questions from Pol and this blog. Anyone else pick up on that?

I sure did! And while I might be biased since it seems like they were based on some of my posts, I think the best questions were asked in the beginning- by directly asking each candidate to address their own shortcoming and the criticisms leveled against them (some of them here- as well as in the coffee shops and bars all around the 87th district) they either get to deflect it (as Reynolds or Calley did) or reinforce them (like all the rest).

After that, I was pretty disappointed in the questions- the SBT issue looks moot with L. Brooks Patterson's gathering of more than enough signatures to allow the state lege to pass it without allowing a veto, not ONE question on health care which is the REAL jobs killer and the reason wages are stagnant, the question on 911 was sort of silly at a state rep forum, and I also agree the the Right to Life issue should have been discussed since stem cell research is obviously one way to attract the life sciences jobs the Governor has been after and Right to Life and its ilk somehow oppose using blastocysts for research that will be destroyed otherwise yet they aren't trying to ban fertility treatments and in-vitro fertilization where these "sacred lives" are dumped in the trashcan every day without so much as a whimper from Right to Life (probably because they know it would kill them as a movement).

Listening to some of the idiots on that stage was painful. As soon as I recover, I'll try to organize my thoughts into something coherent for the front page...

Mike,
I suspect that you are referring to the gate across Greggs Crossing Road, since there are a plethora of gates across the trail, including where now owned but not correctly signed by the County Board.
Take M-79 west out of Nashville, along the trail, until you get to Assyria Road. Take that road North until you get to Greggs Crossing Road. Turn back East toward the Thornapple River on the County-maintained dirt road. In less than a mile, slam on your brakes. You can't see the old railbed from there, or the river, but they are both a short walk with a big dog.
On the other hand, you may be thinking of the gate recently erected by Cornellier and Jacob (not Jacobs) on the City of Hastings portion of the trail. With the disgruntled Viking lunch crowd on your right, and the oblivious McDonalds lunch crowd on your left, cycle West to the far edge of the rear of the Chrysler Superstore. Squeeze on your brakes.
Many of the gates across the trail are legitimate and new. They are free-standing between posts, to prohibit vehicles from using the non-motorized trail. You can easily ride around them on your bike because they are not part of a fence.
It would be a nice investment if the County were to install signs admitting to County responsibility, perhaps similar to a "No bicycles allowed on the sidewalk" sign. Maybe a couple hundred bucks and a few hours of work by an incarcerated citizen.

oldscrotum,
Thanks for the compliment. Perhaps misguided, but not gross. While you are philosophically correct that the individuals discretely placed on the Park Board were mostly shills of the old Bailey Five, the technical authority of the full and legitimate County Board does not extend into the decision-making of an autonomous Board.
Appointment of Park Board members is the job of the County Board, and is not done in secret. It is done by the recommendation of a Committee, which hides it from the too-busy eye of the local press. The Banner has made a frequent issue of the manipulative process, and perhaps could step one pace closer to the fire by pointing out that the lack of a consistent interview process could become the basis for a discrimination lawsuit at the expense of the taxpayers. Most of the members of the County Board do not have any experience in the interview process.

Boggsone said...

Even though we drifted off the subject, it seems the 911 issue gets alot of attention on here, and throughout the County. Tom Wing must be more connected to Battle Creek or Bellevue, he lives in the farthest "neglected" Township of our County. You never hear Assyria Twp mentioned about anything. Do they have a Twp Board or just a FFA meeting each month? All Farmers with no clue, like Tom Wing? Anyone have info that this guy at least graduated from Bellevue High? His comments make me wonder if he needs directions out of bed each morning.

In case people weren't there, the biggest applause line of the State Rep. forum came when Mark Doster personally attested to Judy Wooer's abilities and dedication as a public servant and that her removal was unfair and wrong. The line practically got a standing ovation.

Judy Wooer can be our financial caretaker on the transitional 911 Board as the new County Board makes it responsive to the public safety community and the public at large.

Pol, my idol! You were ever so lenient on your reasons for why the 911 director, of sorts, only finished 23 years on the state police. Red flags should rise when you have an applicant in front of you that did not finish their required 25 year career in their department of choice? Blue walls, though definitely there, are not necesssarily extended to people who leave under less than honorable conditions.

See folks, we are compassionate and not "jealous" as Farmer Wing would lead you to believe. We concentrate more on the problems than on the sinner, as the Pol aptly stated!

Perhaps the "Wing" is an appropriate description of Tom Wing, who takes flight, rather than confront the problems of 911. No guts, two-faced, a human with no position on anything, not even bothering to show up for County Meetings. Not missed, cause he would not have brought up or taken a position on anything of value!

Jeff VanNortwick must be elected, even if only because he will show up! That counts for an awful lot!

Oh, by the way. This is the way it works! If it's my turn to be yelled and screamed at, it's your turn to ask for what you want and be sure to get it. He balances his fights with oh so sweet agreement and offers to help solve your problem! This way, some will be fooled into backing him, totally forgetting his tantrum against them a month before.

Just need to learn the game plan of 911!

First, admission of an error. The Central Dispatch / 911 Board is not interviewed or appointed by the County Board, as far as I can tell, so far. The members seem to be on the Board as a result of their official position. I'm still looking.
Close as I can tell, Charlie is selected by the 911 Board, and no approval is required by the County Board.
There is no oversight of this Board by the County Board.
HOWEVER!
We were far too generous with the millage and that can be easily changed when it comes up again. While it may have been a good idea to provide initial funding, the rest of the funding for services and maintenance should be provided by another method. I would suggest that the law enforcers might step up to the plate with funds from the various townships, villages and city that benefit from these services.
This brings me to the curious relationship with the County Sheriff. Should he change his uniform colors to bluish-brown so he can be recognized as part of the fraternity? Seems like one of the sales pitches was his superior ability to get along with troopers, etc.
The only connection to the County that I am coming up with is the Sheriff. Sure, the Treasurer gets to fondle the cash for a while, but I don't see anything else. Where were we when we were supposed to be watching? No wonder the power is being abused!

The agreement to form 911 goes from millage to millage. If we elect to not renew the millage then the Board ceases to exist. This is out of my league, but I would suspect the millage could be worded to change things around? But, a 2/3's vote of the Twp's, villages, and city, which formed this agreement, can change it with a new vote, even today! Hopefully the people will elect a County Board which will changes things. But, it is our duty to keep this in the headlines.

If it sells newspapers, I will gladly pay $1.00 to read how the Sheriff and his "public" got there constitutional rights to speak honored.

These 911 nuts are on a letter writing campaign now. No one has time to read them, they say. Chiefs must get together to figure out how to get walkie-talkie radios to work right, to hopefully save lives. Put that in your letter ronnie neil. You talk in generalities, not specifics! Everyone in Michigan holds Barry 911 up as the perfect example of how a 911 system should work!

Bull crap! Have these same people come ride in our cop cars at night. You're such a dud ronnie!

Agitator,
I have read and reread your remarks and hope you can see the contradictions. you said,

"The agreement to form 911 goes from millage to millage. If we elect to not renew the millage then the Board ceases to exist."

This is obviously false. If it were true, a millage of .0000001 would cause it to exist. Millage is about funding, not governance.

"But, a 2/3's vote of the Twp's, villages, and city, which formed this agreement, can change it with a new vote, even today!"

O.K. Now take a deep breath and note the absence of the word County.

"Hopefully the people will elect a County Board which will changes things."

While this is a true statement, it doesn't relate to the rant about 911. This is the same as the anti-circus crowd appealing for relief from the City Mayor. It makes for paper sales but is disinformation.

It might be worth a little research for you to explain how the State of Michigan gets to belly up to the banquet and the County Sheriff has to stand out in the rain. Could it have something to do with "Homeland Security"? Perhaps the Feds are secretly involved? As the Sheriff has said, HS has plenty of weapons available. We should tremble at the suggestion.

El, you're mincing words again, you know what was mean't! This is not a debate of words, its all about feelings and how we need change. Your .00001 scenario is silly. Bah bye!

Ag3,
You're right. I know what you meant and you are wrong.
Your rant is about feelings and not about facts.
I hope this is less mincey.

Boggsone said...

El, I guess you have to live it! You obviously have not!

The 2/3's vote train will be coming down the track. Hope you can't sidetrack it. All this will have been worth it. I sometimes feel your job on here is to try and get everything twisted around and people lose focus. Despite your efforts, 911 is going down. Take that to Hastings City Bank and they'll give you 5% interest I bet! R U Charlie or Ronnie?

el grillo said...

Tell me again what it is that you are focused on. I have lived in denial, but it was too muddy.
Being focused on your own words and not doing any homework is called a rant.
Did you attend the County Board Standing Committee meeting where the real action of the County Board takes place?
I sure wish somebody with your passion would gather up a few facts and help us learn more than how operate the Volume knob.
911/Central Dispatch isn't going down. It is a valuable emergency service. It needs some correcting, and correcting requires accurate information and an assortment of positive options. Your shouting just makes intelligent people run for cover.

No, and I'm not Hugo Chavez, either, but I know why he bought jets and guns from Russia!

Kudos to you! So, you're not one of those two. Should check DNA, might have been separated at birth!

911 WILL GO DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!! BET ON IT NELLIE OR ELLIE!

ronnie and charlie running scared, sweat pouring down their thin skulls. Oh my Gosh, they told me I was so perfect in the academy! Alas, then they came out into the real world and people now call them idiots!

Is Barry County now aware maybe getting the State Post in Hastings was a mistake.

County-wide Police Dept is the answer. Get the pretty girls out on the expressways. The wind from passing cars will keep anyone from hearing any words that come out of their bigg mouths.

ronnie/charlie you know where we're at, are you each man enough to do something besides assinine letters and emails?
No, you're cowards, hiding behind your silk nightgowns!

Resign before you leave in embarassment. It's just a matter of time little buddies, you are going to be part of bad Barry County History!

Signed: Your Fan Club!
