Christian Curtis cares only for #1

“Jesus loves me, but He can’t stand you.”
— The Austin Lounge Lizards

A story last weekend in the Grand Rapids Press sports pages on local boy and former big leaguer Chad Curtis is yet another example of those who use their so-called Christian faith to hammer their opponents and expose their own selfishness.

In a story that should be regarded as astonishing because it appeared in print, some rehashing was made of Curtis’ public criticism in 1999 of New York Yankee teammate and shortstop Derek Jeter for fraternizing with the enemy during a brawl with the Seattle Mariners. It seems that Jeter and then-Mariner superstar Alex Rodriguez were friends and took a brawl during a game as an opportunity to chat amicably rather than engage in a barbaric practice that’s outside the rules of baseball yet mostly condoned by MLB and cheered on by the fans and sports casters. Curtis apparently questioned Jeter’s manhood and loyalty for not joining the fracas. I guess someone should ask Curtis: "Who Would Jesus Hit?"

Curtis, who grew up in Middleville and now lives in the Caledonia area, apparently believes that in order to be a true athlete you must treat your enemy with scorn, derision or downright hostility, that you certainly shouldn’t treat the opposition with respect. I'm sure many reading this will think I'm making some wild leap of logic but I think it’s that kind of Neanderthal thinking that continues to get the United States into dumb and costly wars like in Iraq and Vietnam. It's a symptom of a culture and society that thinks being "number 1" is the goal no matter how you get there. It's also shows that often someone can give lip service to practicing Christianity without actually understanding what Jesus was trying to teach.

However, the non-story published in the GR Press Sunday simply once again pointed to Curtis’ character, or lack thereof. Chad Curtis always has been a selfish, spoiled child, and because he’s a big-time Major Leaguer, he gets respect he doesn’t deserve.

Curtis, while he was playing for the California Angels back in the early 1990s, once came to an elementary classroom at Thornapple Kellogg in Middleville to tell the kiddies all about how being a good Christian has a lot to do with being a success. Not long afterward, the Angels traded him, with the manager commenting he rarely, if ever, had seen a player more selfish than Curtis.

By the time Curtis finally gave up his baseball career, he had played for seven teams in 10 years. He was swapped around an awful lot, and I heard not very many teams were willing to put up with his behavior. In one case, it was reported that he got into a altercation with a teammate, leading to his being asked to pack his bags yet again. Not exactly what I would call a good, Christian role model for the kiddies.

After he retired, he came back to this area with his riches and he bought a horse ranch near Alto and after earning a bachelor’s degree, he landed an elementary teaching position at Caledonia. He became close friends with now discredited former Superintendent Wes VanDenburg, who attempted to engineer the hiring of Curtis as head varsity baseball coach, even though the Caledonia High School Fighting Scots had done pretty well of late.

Curtis eventually landed the job, though VanDenburg got the ax after it was determined the school chief had played fast and loose with his credit card and expense accounts. When he was arrested, Curtis posted bail.

In one of the more bizarre school board meetings anyone will ever see, VanDenburg, just before he was canned, showed school board members a video of Curtis hitting a World Series game-winning homer for the Yankees. So what’s that got to do with education?

We live in a society that worships athletes far more than what they deserve and pay them far more than what they deserve. It’s gotten so bad that we even listen to their advice rather than more worthy or knowledgeable people, and we even elect them to positions they don’t deserve because of their celebrity status.

And in more recent years we’ve been subjected to their selfish and public pronouncements that “God loves me so much he makes the outcome of my career and contests be in my favor.” A few examples:
  • Remember that big girl who played for Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University a couple of years ago, who said during an NCAA tournament press conference that the Lord was on her team’s side and they would win it all? Falwell and company were squashed big time in their next ballgame.
  • Remember Tigers’ pitcher Frank Tanana, after shutting out the Toronto Blue Jays in a playoff game in 1987, saying on TV, “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for this moment?” Tanana’s career didn’t go places after that.
  • Remember the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills players on each sideline praying as the Bills’ kicker was set to kick the winning field goal in the Super Bowl? Apparently, God was a Giants fan.
  • Remember Monte Clark’s infamous prayer in the Lions’ 1983 playoff game against the San Francisco 49ers, when Eddy Murray missed a 41-yard field goal that would have won it. Must be God loves Frisco, but He can’t stand Clark.
But once again, after reading the GR Press article, I wondered why this was news. It seems A. Rod and Jeter are no longer best of friends, which prompted some ace sports reporter to dredge up an incident from more than seven years earlier. Maybe this story would have been more appropriate on the cover of “People,” or better yet, the National Inquirer. Or maybe it really was appropriate in the pages of the Grand Rapids Press, a newspaper that should really be printed on toilet paper so it can serve it's proper function: taking care of #2.

[I am heavily medicated right now, so this might not make sense...]

The GRP, like the local TV stations, always like to fawn over minor and big time professional athletes.

Lately, they have been kissing Chris Kaman's (sp?--Center for LA Clippers)posterior. This dunderhead , Curtis, probably got this puff piece done on him a while back. The writers needed to fill a space, so they pulled out this turd.

The one GR sports star that really makes me cringe, is that pompous Floyd Mayweather Jr.. He singlehandedly killed what remaining interest I had for boxing. The bulk of it had left during the crazy Tyson days.

I give kudos to star local athletes like Jeter, because they have set the standard of the type of character to display on and off the field.

While I agree with Pol, it seems to me that our own local toiletpaper substitute, The Hastings Banner, has worked hard to get into the Journalistic Hall of Shame.
David Young's decision to run the 'infamous' Don Johnson ode to foul and pre-neanderthal letter writing in last Thursday's paper brings shame to the entire profession. Even the Grand Rapids Press has standards enough to trash a piece of hate filled biggoted rantings of this angry biggoted Nazi.
Any editor worth the name would have deep sixed this piece of excrement upon first skimming it.
David will whine that everyone has a right to express their opinion in a letter to the Banner. It would seem that Young chose not only to publish Johnson,s trash, but to do so with absolutely no thought of the damage it did to the Dickenson family.
Like many hundreds I knew Laura. I am acquainted with her father and brothers. Like hundreds of othes I wish I had known Laura longer and better and that I could still bask in the sunshine of her smile.
Like hundreds of others I have done what little I could to ease the pain of this wonderful family who was hurt so badly by Laura's death.
That David Young chose not only to publish the ramblings of this pathetic hate filled thug, but he also failed miserably in his responsibility to edit the diatribe.
Makes me wonder if David Young is himself the Christian he claims to be.

Pruth?, Why don't you write a letter yourself and have it published with your feelings like D Johnson has done. Stand up in public and face him down as to your opposition of his views. Maybe put in it your thoughts as to this murderer’s conviction would only bring more unnecessary incarceration in this state.

Yea, that’s the ticket.

You go girl.

Pat,
Please believe me when I say the world as a whole is better off when biggots, and rascists are allowed to melt in the sunlight, rather than grow in the dark. On this day March 7, 1965, at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma Alabama about 600 blacks began to shine the light, and the world saw.

I have to disagree with P-truth. I rather see rantings like Mr. Johnson's published rather than being ignored by the Advance/Booth monopoly (of which the GRP, Penasee, and KG are a part) because I am not in the "right" geography. I called to complain to a long time reporter I knew at the GRP that Barry County politics and issues were being ignored (more than in past years). He told me if it wasn't happening in Kent/Ottawa, it wasn't being covered.

I guess you have to have a meth producing township supervisor to direct the GRPress' attention away from the Kent/Ottawa pool.

Unsuitable for publication. Simple. As for writing a letter to the Toilet Banner and adding to the long drawn out agony for the family...it is the sort of stupid thing CD would think of...
Folks...there are limits and even spit on the sidewalk spreads infection unless there is a hot sun...No CD, the family has had far too uch grief to draw it out in the Banner.

And your anger and name calling slander makes it better? Oh that’s right, you are hiding behind this web site instead of standing up publicly. And you don’t limit yourself to attacking the writer but you also go into a hateful position concerning the messenger too. How can you accuse the Banner of not publishing the entire story (previous entries) and now condemn it for doing so? No Pruth, this attack of yours on D. Johnson’s letter just puts you on his level so blatantly that all can see.

Mr. Johnson has now discredited himself for some time to come. To match his hate only does the same for you.

Think of it this way if you can, putting it out there as far as it is in left field makes it much easier to discredit. To suppress this writer’s letter is against our laws. This is something one should stand for (free speech) as it has made this country more open than most others. Or is this just more of Pruth?'s desire to control others?

PS - wouldn't it have made better sense to discredit Mr. Johnson's letter by making him look foolish than to attack him and the Banner in such a vicious manner? This would have easily been accomplished by naming some extremely important black people like Carver and Powell. And then go in his face with a few very important contributions of blacks during WWII since he brought it up. Go into how the blacks ALWAYS drew the lowest, dirtiest jobs. Maybe point out how Mr. Johnson’s standard of living would not be obtainable without the contributions of ALL of the thousands of different cultures in this country. Just a thought Pruth, Just a thought.

I'm sorry to see people trashing the HASTINGS BANNER just because it prints letters that you disagree with. I think the community is very fortunate to have a local paper of this caliber. So long as the letters don't contain foul and libileous language they should be printed. I've known Don Johnson for many years and rarely read anything he writes because I know ahead of time what the tone of his letter will be. Like the TV you can turn him out by not wasting your time reading his often over the top comments.
Re sports and religious fanatics: I have to agree that when you mix sports and religious fanaticism you have a sorry, sad, and irrational tangled mess.
When I see stories in the GR Press about the antics of the Mayweathers which they seem to hold out as role models it makes me want to puke..... but, they have a right to print this tripe if they want to.
I've seen some criticism of the Banner for printing so much sports news. Although I'm not a big sports fan I think it is wonderful that they cover Barry County high school sports so well. It helps bring the people of Barry County together and makes a lot of grandparents, parents, brothers, sisters, cousins and aunts very happy indeed.
The HASTINGS BANNER has won many awards and has received accolades by peers and I for one look forward to reading each issue.

Collibri,

Your rationale falls apart, when others not familliar with Mr. Johnson, read what has been put to print. This is not something that without editorial commentary I wish others to read in our hometown paper.
I do not know Mr. Johnson, so I call on those that do, to explain the line he has crossed to him. I also call for a public apology from him, for using the name of an innocent, deceased girl, to spew his hateful rhetoric.
Patthetruth,
I personally apologize to you, and the family of Miss Dickinson for posting what I did without first reading Mr. Johnsons letter. Like others, I tend to overlook that which I find to be remedial. I saw his name, and read something else.
This does not change my opinion, but only explains my less than human response to your pain, and anger.

truthfulpat said...

CD's logic falls apart at writing. No newspaper has any obligation to publish ANY letter. The idea that anyone who cares about the Dickenson family would perpetuate the letters to the editor is just nutty.
All newspapers reserve the right to decide what is unsuitable for publication.
CD does not understand that Don Johnson is well known for his ignorance and that it will do no good to expose him...he has already done that. As for the banner and my so called attack...they chose to publish the rubbish.
As for DC, there is no point to interaction....he shoud just go to Freeport..

"We should look at it as the trash that it is. It's a program of that nature on a network designed for people with a lowly upbringing and bad customs"

Costa Rican Tourism Minister Carlos Benavides commenting on the Emmy-winning "South Park" recent show insulting his country on global TV.

We no longer live in a vacuum. The entire world is watching. Fortunately the Hastings banner isn't on line. Otherwise the publishing of soiled undershorts would be done for more than 7500 people to see.

Unfortunately, this blog has a broader distribution. Don Johnson used to be hidden in the local closet. Now the whole world gets to have it's shoes pissed on.

It's raining and pouring, and this old man is snoring. zzzzzzzz

Children's Dad said...

Pruth? Are you still licking thy wounds? Do you even understand what logic is? For a paper to be unbiased as you and so many others seem to want (unless it is slanted to your particular position) it IS required to publish all sides of a subject as painful as that might be. You seem intent in your demands that the Banner is trash yet you insist it only print one side of an issue and then refuse to "belly up to the bar", put your writing talents to good use and refute this man (or at least his position).

People like Don are necessary to our culture and the continual review of our evolution (socially speaking). Instead of your personal hateful words you would have been better off taking on his issues that were raised and pointing out to those not “enlightened” with Don the folly of his reasoning. You are as guilty as he for this continual bigotry (both yours and his) as you only spew hateful words and attacks like he. Don at least stands up publicly and says his while you stand behind anonymity to do yours.

You keep clinging to your claim of avoiding continued pain for the Dickinson family yet when they need support in this you slink out of sight. Why do you feel it better to avoid an obvious touchy subject such as this? Why do you believe that there is less pain involved to let this stand? This is out there now so deal with it. Do you desire the Dickinson’s to remember that nobody stepped forward to refute this individuals position?

For those that do not know Don and read his words thinking they are the position of the majority you owe it to the Dickinson’s and them to stand up and confront this bully. You put yourself out front with your attack and thumping your chest claiming to know the family so get on this instead of cowering.

Anybody who reads the Hastings banner is familiar with the writing of Don Johnson and generally does not suffer all the way through the rambling gibberish. To respond to that noise would add credence to static.

This blog has gone for an unusually long time without focusing on anything but stinky underpants.

Pol Watcher: I'm really not trying to change the subject but I'd be interested in a discussion sometime soon about the Rutland Township Board meeting last night where a proposed relocation of WalMart was discussed. I understand that they want to construct a new larger store on the site of the present Consumers Energy property located just west of Pennock Hospital and Cook Road on Green Street. What plans do they have for increased traffic? Who pays for these changes since it is no longer a part of the state road system? How will the greatly increased traffic impact the residential areas of West Green Street and Pennock Hospital? Is this a good idea for the community? Is WalMart a good thing for a community to have in the first place? Some communities have sucessfully blocked WalMart when the consensus in the community opposed this globalized corporation.

el grillo said...

Hummingbird,
Please do not attempt to divert our attention away from stinky underpants!
This shift in direction has already caused a few new cases of whiplash over at Pennock and the number of cases of vertabral dislocation among readers who are not writers has yet to be determined.
Confine your attention to issues defined. Gazing elsewhere will label you as a Liberal. Wal-Mart is not to be criticized in public. The penalty will be to have future comments redirected to the office of Homeland Security.

truthfulpat said...

Siting a Super Walmart there is a disaster in so many ways...the access, the trafic snarls and the clear threat to Downtown. Moving this blight to the new location is simply a disaster. Their current location is the worst site plan I have ever seen...and now this. Does Rutland have any respect for intelligen planning....the evidence is that they do not!

el colibri said...

Well, this is the bird responding. Better late than ever as they say. Truth of the matter is I am a proud card carrying liberal. In all probability the Department of Homeland Security already is monitoring my postings (perhaps yours as well?}.
The proposed relocation of WalMart has just about got to be one of the most important issues facing Barry County right now. The impact on Barry County if they construct one of their super stores on west Green street, or anywhere else in Barry County for that matter, is huge.
Globalization is the basic reason Michigan is in the economic bind it finds itself fight now. WalMart represents the personification of globalization and could well turn out to be ringing the death knell of our local economy and the disintegation of our social structure as we've known it for generations.
Read up on how WalMart operates. Find out how they sap local resources to help finance health care for their employees. Learn how they manipulate the local tax structure to their advantage etc etc.
These sites have a lot of information about this and are well worth perusing:

Lacking an intelligent Comprehensive Master Plan after spending well over $75,000 on Williams & Works (about the same amount it stole from Green Gables) makes Barry County attractive prey for corporate parasiting.
With any kind of luck, the old Wal-Mart building might be used for manufacturing parts for Cadillac SUVs, and after attracting unskilled assembly workers to the area and absorbing tax abatement dollars it could close shop and wail about how creative third world countries have recognized our transportation needs and filled them.
¿Taken a ride in a new Busscar unit from Brazil, lately? Enjoy the ride.

The most disgusting part is that the Hastings Area Schools sold the property to make the package complete for1,000,000. The damage this ill thought out move will cost this community far more than the $1,000,000 the school board took in.
If it is not too late, the Board should recind the option, refund WHATEVER MONIES IT TOOK and stop the project cold.\
Perhaps a recall of the entire bunch would get their atention.

Children's Dad said...

I am unsure as to how and what the specifics are but will the purchase of that property by Walmart Inc. from the school system place it back on the tax rolls?

Another quick question - Is all of the property purchased by Pennock Hospital/Pennock Ventures (Viacom,Ferris Property, Pennock Village, various houses, etc...) still on the tax rolls or is it now exempt due to non profit ownership?

Raising $75,000 (without raising general taxes) to aid the gables shelter should not be a problem. as far as it only taking $1.25 per tax payer per week to save the state budget, thats just a drop in the bucket as to what it will realistically take to remedy this.
Pruth?, you seem to think you have all the answers, why not run for a spot in our local government and fix this instead of just being so angry about it?

FYI : A meeting has been called for this evening [Tuesday March 14th] at 7:00 PM at the Rutland Township Hall.... the WalMart relocation proposal will be discussed. I understand that many people are planning to attend. It is an open meeting.
There are a lot of citizens in Barry County who do NOT want a WalMart super-store located anywhere in Barry County. Period! They believe that its long term economic effect will be devastating to the entire region.

Hey...just so you know. When Mr. Curtis was teaching at Caledonia, I was in his P.E. class as a sophomore. I don't know very much about his baseball career, but I do know that he was a great teacher, and he cared about his students, you could really tell.

I just wish you wouldn't judge someone so harshly...making all those conclusions based on not a lot of info, and you really don't know the guy.
